It was founded as an air taxi operator on April 1, 1992 and it started operations in 1993. At present, it is India's second largest airline. Magazine Which? ranked Jet Airways as the world´s second best long-haul airline in 2008.

Jet Airways operates flights to various domestic and international destinations across Asia, Europe and North America as well as to Africa. Jet Airways operates two low-cost airlines as well: JetLite and Jet Airways Konnect.

The airline offers online check-in on its website. For its frequent flyers the airline has a loyalty program called JetPrivilege.
