Delta SkyMiles are now forever

Back to news

The announcement from Delta Air Lines came by surprise last week. SkyMiles is the first airline loyalty program to eliminate mileage expiration. Others will likely follow.

Until now, the miles expired if there was no activity on the account for 24 months.

Delta's unexpected move

It is common for loyalty programs that you can't save the bonus miles for long. It there's no activity on the account, the miles will expire after a given period of time. 24 months is the most common period. That's a good way of forcing the passengers to use the loyalty programs regularly. However, those not flying very often could easily loose all the benefits.

The move by Delta Air Lines is good for less frequent travelers. Everlasting miles make SkyMiles more friendly for them, not having to think about the expiration deadline. Industry analysts expect other major US airlines to follow Delta's lead. Finally, the one benefiting from Delta's move will be the customer.
