The French airlines have reported, that the latest strike cost them more than the April volcano eruption on Iceland. The nationwide strike has been executed six times in the past two months.
Latest strike cost estimations
Lionel Guerin, the head of FNAM (airline industry trade association) and CEO of airlines Airlinair and Transavia France, has stated the costs for the latest strike were already higher that the ones suffered during Icelandic volcano ash crisis. No exact number was mentioned, however the costs in lost business during Eyjafjallajökull eruption are estimated to €188 million (roughly 268 million in USD).
Air France, the largest airline in France, has estimated it's daily loss, for each day of the nationwide strike, at about €5 million. Emergency measures regarding aviation fuel supplies had cost the most.
What's the strike about?
The French are known for their favor for strikes. The latest dispute is mainly about retirement age. Currently a worker retires at 60. Due to the ongoing global economy crisis, the French national debt is rising quickly. In order to slow it down, a pension reform has been prepared by the President, Nicolas Sarkozy. The retirement age should now be 62.
