"Stop the rip-off surcharges", says Which? to airlines
Which?, the largest consumer body in the United Kingdom, is launching a campaign to fight the ever-increasing surcharges. The public is invited to sign the „super complaint“
On March 7, all relevant materials will be submitted to the fair trade authority.
Which? using its power to reduce surcharges
The service charges, paid upon every credit card transaction, got into focus of the well-known British consumer body. While it is a common practice with many retailers, low cost airlines are no doubt the worst offenders. For example, with Ryanair there is a surcharge for every leg of the journey, even if only one transaction is processed in fact.
Which? focuses on Ryanair for an obvious reason. A family of four is currently charged an additional £40 on a roundtrip flight. Still, this infamous low cost airline is not the only one applying such practices. The same family will be charged £38 with flybe or £5.50 with easyJet. The actual price for processing the payment is about 20 pence when using a debit card. It is no more than 2% of the transaction value with a credit card.

Which? is using the „super complaint“ to force the British Office of Fair Trading to investigate the inadequate surcharges. Customers are invited to sign the on-line petition to support the case. The case is to be submitted on March 7, 2011.
